History

The Fisheries Science Study Program is a department that studies various sciences regarding Aquaculture or Aquaculture, Utilization of Fishery Resources, Aquatic Resources Management and Fishery Product Processing. Education in the field of fisheries has quite a lot of enthusiasts, as evidenced by the existence of 18 Vocational High Schools on Sumbawa Island which have majors related to fisheries. However, the lack of universities on the island of Sumbawa that offer fisheries science majors makes it difficult for many students to continue their education to a higher level. It is hoped that this study program will be able to assist local governments in increasing human resources who are experts in the field of fisheries.

The Fisheries Science Study Program at the Sumbawa University of Technology (UTS) is the answer to the needs of the people of Sumbawa Regency (including Districts/Cities throughout Sumbawa Island) in maximizing the use of large water resources. According to the 2019 BPS data, Sumbawa Regency has a water resource potential of 9,014,176.63 hectares, and has only been utilized for an area of ​​1,391,754.62 hectares. Fish Production Potential in Kab. Sumbawa is also quite large and has not been improved optimally. Regency. Sumbawa has a lot of potential for the development of production of several fishery commodities, such as seaweed and shrimp (pond). The increasing number of types of fishing industry, both in the upstream and downstream sectors, also has a significant impact on increasing the production of fishery products.

The increasing number of industries in the fisheries sector in Sumbawa Regency certainly needs to be taken seriously. Especially in the preparation of local human resources who have the right scientific capacity in managing the potential of waters in Sumbawa Regency. Therefore, UTS as one of the higher education institutions in 6 districts. Sumbawa considers it important to establish the Fisheries Science Study Program. This Study Program is here to produce competent human resources in the field of aquaculture, entrepreneurial spirit and environmentally sustainable (Sustainable Development).

  • Fishery Extension is a person who has the ability to communicate effectively with individuals, groups or institutions with the aim of empowering, transferring knowledge and strengthening the capabilities of the main fishery community actors (fishermen, fish cultivators, fish processors, marketers of fishery products, and people who carry out business in the field of fisheries). other fisheries) through a participatory learning process in order to form a community of people who understand the application of techniques, technology and innovations in the field of aquaculture that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The fishery instructor is usually a State Civil Apparatus (ASN) under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), or a private extension, and/or self-help extension (Permen No. 31/PERMEN-KP/2014). ASN fishery instructors are civil servants who are given full duties, responsibilities, authorities, and rights by authorized officials in the fishery scope organizational unit to carry out extension activities. Private fishery instructors are extension workers who come from the business world and/or institutions that have competence in the field of extension. Self-help fishery instructors are the main actors who are successful in their business and other community members who with their own awareness are willing and able to become extension workers.

  • Fish Quarantine Employee is a person who has the main authority and duty to carry out preventive measures to prevent the entry and spread of pests and diseases of fish from abroad and from one area to another within the country, or their exit from within the territory of the Republic of Indonesia. They are also tasked with controlling the quality and safety of fishery products, implementing a quality management system, and supervising the biosafety of fish.   • Fisheries Researcher or often called scientist is a term for someone whose main task is to conduct research and/or development of science and technology. Most of the research conducted aims to find solutions to various problems. A researcher must master scientific rules and methods, ranging from library search techniques, data collection techniques, data processing techniques, scientific writing techniques, presentation techniques, research planning techniques, and so on. Fishery science researcher is someone who has the ability to explore the potential of fisheries and marine resources through research.
  • Fishery Consultant is a professional who provides advisory services (consultancy service) in the field of fisheries. Consultants are almost always needed in every planning of fishery business activities, especially aquaculture. both by the government and the private sector. ranging from the level of individual cultivation to industry.   • Fishery Manager/Entrepreneur is someone who has the authority to design, review, and evaluate the overall operation of a fishery business.
