The Biotechnology Study Program aims to produce qualified biotechnology graduates with modern biotechnology knowledge and expertise who are able to take a role in solving local, national and global problems based on local wisdom.

History

The Biotechnology Study Program was originally named the Technobiology Study Program, the Faculty of Technobiology, which was founded in conjunction with the establishment of the Sumbawa University of Technology in 2013. Initially, the Faculty of Technobiology only houses the Technobiology Study Program, whose legality of establishment refers to the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 65/E/0/2013 concerning the establishment of the Sumbawa University of Technology (UTS). Rebranding of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology based on the Decree of the Chancellor of the Sumbawa University of Technology Number: 299/UTS/SK/III/2022 concerning the Revision of Changes in Faculty Names and Grouping of Study Programs at the Sumbawa University of Technology. Similar to the Faculty, the Biotechnology Study Program has also undergone a rebranding from the Technobiology Study Program based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 329/E/O/2022.

Milestones are used as the basis for determining the target stages of the development of the Biotechnology Study Program as follows:

  1. The study program’s internal quality development program includes the quality of resources and the provision of adequate facilities and infrastructure to support the proper functioning of the educational process
  2. Strengthening the competitiveness of study programs in terms of increasing lecturers’ research grant income, student achievements, improving services and other related achievements

 

Description

Biotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology, Sumbawa University of Technology, as a higher education institution aims to produce qualified biotechnology graduates equipped with modern biotechnology knowledge and expertise who are able to take roles in solving local, national and global problems based on local wisdom. The fields of interest in biotechnology are adjusted to the local content of Sumbawa, including four fields, namely:

  1. The field of specialization “Food Biotechnology and Agrocomplexes” contains several courses related to the application of biotechnology in the field of food bioindustry and agrocomplexes, which include agriculture, forestry, fisheries, plantations and forestry.
  2. The field of specialization is “Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology” which is related to biotechnology application courses in the world of health and medicine which includes the molecular basics of a disease, infectious diseases, utilization of genetic information, epigenetic, vaccines, transgenics, pharmacogenetics, gene therapy, and various products biological.
  3. The field of specialization is “Environmental and Mining Biotechnology” which includes several courses on the application of biotechnology in the environment and mining, biological wastewater treatment technology, and biomining
  4. The field of specialization “Energy and Industrial Biotechnology” includes courses related to industrial processes, biological basics in the biotechnology industry, basic operations in the fermentation industry, alcohol-based fermentation industries, and bioenergy production.

The Biotechnology Study Program is supported by the capacity of lecturers who are graduates of well-known domestic and foreign universities (3 lecturers with doctoral qualifications from the University of New Castle and Tokyo University and Agriculture Technology, 8 lecturers with master qualifications from Lund University, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Tokyo University of Technology , Putra Malaysia University, Bogor Agricultural University, and Surabaya State University).

To become a comfortable and fun learning house to grow fully as prospective scientists, technologists, and entrepreneurs in the field of biotechnology that are beneficial to the universe.

The vision is described as follows:

  1. The house, as a place in which there are various family activities aimed at caring for, supporting, and understanding, and making each other successful.
  2. Learning, there is a teaching and learning process, where everyone continues to develop themselves, character, and academic abilities that are carried out with a measurable, structured, and well-evaluated system in the curriculum and institutional system.
  3. Comfortable, everyone at UTS feels the need for a standard of living that is met, including: physical, spiritual, and spiritual aspects.
  4. Fun, gives a feeling of pleasure to the surrounding environment.
  5. Grow, gradually to develop / process.
  6. Whole, integral, both physically, emotionally, and spiritually

  • To become a superior study program in the field of biotechnology that has modern research facilities to produce research that is beneficial for scientific development and is beneficial for others, especially the people of eastern Indonesia.
  • Become a superior study program in the field of biotechnology that can apply the results of the teaching and research process of biotechnology in a directed and sustainable community service activity
  • Become a healthy and independent study program in management both in the financial system, infrastructure, human resources, and administratio
  • Short-term
    1. Produce graduates who have noble character and character according to religion, national culture, and local wisdom
    2. Producing qualified graduates with excellent competency-based processes, supported by adequate facilities and infrastructure, very well qualified educators, educational staff and laboratory assistants
    3. Produce scholars who have TOEFL scores
    4. Produce graduates who have the ability to apply scientific fields to empower local potential
    5. Produce graduates who are sensitive to the development of science and technology
    6. Program to improve education and training of educators and education personnel to a higher level
  • Medium-term
    1. Have all educators who have a National Lecturer Identification Number (NLID)
    2. Recruiting educators and education personnel as needed
    3. Have 15% of educators who have a strata 3 (S3) education and 85% of educators who have strata 2 (S2) education
    4. Improving wider cooperative relations with several institutions related to science at the regional, national, and international levels
    5. Have 70% of adequate educational support facilities and infrastructure for the implementation of education
  • Long-term
    1. Have 50% of the teaching staff with the title of professor and 50% of the teaching staff with a strata 3 (S3) education
    2. Produce scholars who have a TOEFL score of 500
    3. Have 100% complete educational support facilities and infrastructure such as classroom buildings, laboratories, and equipment
